My Step-by-Step Webdesign Process

Designing a website is more than just choosing colors and placing buttons — it’s about creating an experience that communicates your brand, connects with your audience, and achieves specific goals. Over the years, I’ve developed a reliable, efficient workflow that balances creativity with strategy. In this article, I’ll walk you through my step-by-step process for designing a website, from the first conversation to final launch.
1. Discovery & Strategy
Every great website starts with a deep understanding of the brand and its audience.
What I do in this phase:
- Talk with the client to understand their goals, target users, and brand values.
- Audit the existing website (if applicable) to see what’s working and what’s not.
- Research competitors to find opportunities for differentiation.
- Define the project scope, timeline, and deliverables.
Goal: Set a clear foundation for design decisions.
2. Site Architecture & Planning
Before any design begins, I map out the structure of the website to make sure it’s easy to navigate and aligned with the user journey.
- What I create:
- A sitemap that outlines the main pages and how they connect.
- Basic user flows to visualize how users move through the site.
- Wireframes (low-fidelity sketches) of key pages to plan layout and content areas.
Think of this as the blueprint of the website.

3. Content Collection
Design and content go hand in hand. The earlier I have the content, the more accurate and effective the design will be.
In this step:
- I work with the client to gather or create written content, images, and other assets.
- If content isn’t ready, I use placeholder text with clear instructions on what’s needed.
Content first = smarter design later.
4. Visual Design
Now the fun part begins — turning ideas into visuals.
What I focus on:
- Designing the homepage first, to set the tone and style.
- Applying the brand’s colors, fonts, and visual identity.
- Using hierarchy, whitespace, and visual cues to guide users.
- Designing responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile.
I share early design drafts (mockups or live prototypes) with the client for feedback and iterate from there.
Good design isn’t just beautiful — it’s functional.

5. Development (if applicable)
If I’m handling both design and development (which I often do), I then build the website based on the final design.
Tools I use:
- Webflow, Tilda, Shopify, WixStudio.
- Or pass files to a developer if it's a larger custom build.
Final Thoughts
My website design process is built on communication, strategy, and thoughtful design. Every project is unique, but the structure helps me deliver consistent, high-quality results — without the stress or confusion.
